DT RCam Multispectra Edition

The DT Multispectra functions as an extension of the DT RCam using the same software, workflows, and accessories, meaning that institutions do not have to invest in a single-purpose solution to include multispectral imaging in their toolkit. Every object being imaged can be captured in up to three spectral bands (e.g. visible-only, IR, UV).

The Importance of Multispectral Imaging

The Digital Transitions Division of Cultural Heritage is dedicated to providing tools that combine a high rate of capture with preserving image quality that exceeds FADGI 4-star and Strict METAMORFOZE guidelines while maintaining conservation handling of the material. While today’s imaging guidelines do not provide any requirement to include capture outside of the visible spectrum we feel it is an important consideration for many cultural heritage applications.

Unseen Light

Because infrared light is not visible to the human eye it is impossible to know, simply by looking with your eyes, whether or not an infrared capture of an object will provide any additional information or context about that object. Including infrared capture in the digitization of an object is the only way to examine the object in this spectrum.
This can be especially important for objects which can be categorically said to have important infrared components. One example of this is a document in which writing or content has been obscured by singeing or burning; in such documents infrared capture can provide a clear image of the original content even in cases where the original content is completely obscured in the visual spectrum. It can also be important in instances such as counterfeit identification (even a facsimile which is visually perfect can show differences in the infrared spectrum), and botanical imaging where UV and IR can show patterns and decorative elements not visible to the naked eye.

The DT Multispectra – a Breakthrough Solution

The DT Multispectra combines preservation grade image quality, rapid capture, and multispectral imaging in a revolutionary way. Preservation grade image quality is provided using a 40mp, 60mp, or 80mp medium format sensor with high-quality large-format Schneider optics. Rapid capture is possible in sustained workflows exceeding 20 objects per minute, with each object being imaged in up to three spectral bands (e.g. visible-only, IR, UV).
The traditional focus-shift issue of non-visible imaging is elegantly accounted for by means of adjustable focus locks, and the hassle of changing filters is replaced by a rapid Filter Turret which can switch between up to three filters in addition to an optional supplemental master filter. Most importantly the DT Multispectra functions as an extension of the DT RCam, using the same software, workflows, and accessories, meaning that institutions do not have to invest in a single-purpose solution to include multispectral imaging in their toolkit.
